Like all Fine Art, photography can challenge and inform the intellect and the spirit at the same time as it delights the eye. Since the 1970s, I have been finding echoes of human emotions and longings in natural and urban settings. I have explored our effects on the natural environment, particularly through the electrical grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most of my early practice was in the Modern tradition, influenced by Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and others. I made crisp black-and-white images with an emphasis on composition. You can see some of those in my Analog Gallery<\/a>. I also made images that went beyond straight representation \u2013 see my Movements of the Heart<\/a> series for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n More recently, especially with digital tools, I have been branching out into more contemporary forms, with extended sequences for storytelling (e.g. The PATH to Emptiness<\/a>), collage, layering and manipulation of colours (e.g. The Fallen<\/a>) and use of smartphone cameras (or their misuse \u2013 such as shooting panoramas from moving vehicles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n PixSilver comes from a blending of the Pixels in my digital imagery, and the Silver halides in my wet-darkroom images. It\u2019s been a while since I worked in a darkroom, and I miss it, as you will read in Scanograms<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I have been in Juried Art shows in Stouffville, Uxbridge and Toronto. I have also been on the Uxbridge, King and Newmarket Studio Tours. Until December 2018 I was on the Board of the NGA (Newmarket Group of Artists<\/a>). Some recent awards are listed under Shows<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In October of 2019, Peggy Stevens and I hosted the first annual Newmarket Juried Art Show at Newmarket\u2019s Old Town Hall. We had been planning and working on it for almost two and a half years, and we are very happy with the show that resulted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We had to move the Show online for 2020 and 2021, due to the pandemic.
